Subway Art in New York

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

If you are around NY sometime, do visit the Bryant Park Station to see work by a great Artition participant, Joshua Spodek.

Read what Josh says about his piece:

My first big public art piece went up in the Bryant Park subway stop at
42nd and 6th Avenue last week through MTA Arts for Transit! You can see
it at the bottom of the stairs at the northwest corner of Bryant Park
(the videos below show you where it is).

Four students at NYU Tisch School of Arts Interactive Telecommunications
Project (ITP) co-created it — Brett Murphy, Igal Nassima, Eyal Ohana,
and Molly Schwartz — with Submedia providing equipment and support
(using no MTA funds).

If you’ve seen my work, you know the medium: still images that appear
animated when you move past. This display is digital, which is new, so
the images cycle between our 1.5 second animations, each inspired by
Bryant Park — images of nature, ice skating, fashion week, the
carousel, abstractions, etc.

The display took almost two years of development. As usual, most of the
work was in the last two weeks — late nights, moving stuff in
blizzards, approvals, etc. If anyone wants stories, just ask, there are
plenty. I also make smaller pieces for individuals and am working on a
large series for a gallery show. In the meantime, check out these videos
and links of the display (keeping in mind videos don’t compare with
seeing it in person):

Rory Nugent: New Paintings of Devon and the Hebrides at The Air Gallery

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

A new exhibition opens next week at The Air Gallery – a collection of new paintings by Rory Nugent of the Hebrides and Devon.

Born in 1971, Rory trained at the Royal College of Art. He works in oil paint on slate, wood and canvas, describing his paintings as ‘enclosed fragments’ representing the elemental beauty of land, sea and sky, capturing the abstract serenity and simplicity of what he sees in Nature. This new work reflects the insularity of the artist in the landscape, each image depicting nature as a wild entity in itself – in his words ‘unhumanised, sublime and untamed’.

He has shown his work in numerous group and solo shows including Cork Street, The Barbican Centre and The Royal Academy. Rory lives and works in Devon.

The exhibition is open each day from 10:00am-6:00pm Monday 19th until Friday 23rd October, and on Saturday 24th October from 11:00am-4:00pm.

Rory’s work can be seen at www.rorynugent.co.uk and contacted at info@rorynugent.co.uk

Louis Vuitton Journeys

Monday, December 1st, 2008

Hey there,

For all of you who are fans of video-art (and maybe also the fashion label itself), this could be really interesting.

The fashion label Louis Vuitton also provides a project called “LV Journeys”.

I consider it as highly interesting and inspiring, for they show the lives and

inspirational aspects of artists like Keith Richards and Francis Ford Copolla.

Also a very interesting view of Moscow by Michail Gorbatschow in a voice-documented

photo session.

Glenfiddish Barrel Art

Monday, December 1st, 2008

hey there,

lately I’ve seen something I regard as incomparable yet.

It’s an ambitioned and also somehow funny art-project called “Barrel Art” by the London based firm Johnson Banks (johnsonbanks.co.uk).

It’s about sculptures made from Johnny Walker Scotch Brand’s Barrels. I think by losing their actual sense and getting destroyed for arts sake, they somehow resurrect as really enjoyable and also worthy pieces of modern art.

While you can visit the actual firm’s page (mentioned above), there is also a flickr gallery showing all pieces
